How to Make Fake Flowers Look Elegant

Aren’t those real rose arrangements that last a year gorgeous? But those prices are outrageous! You know what else lasts a year? Fake flowers from Dollar Tree. If you want to see how to make fake flowers look elegant, then keep reading or see it come to life in the video below.

// what are forever roses?

To make flowers that last a year must take some sort of magic and maybe that’s what makes them so expensive. How do companies like Venus et Fluer make these roses last?

Places like Venus et Fleur use a special formula of non-toxic bleach to remove the color from the roses when they’re at their peak. Then they dehydrate the roses to help preserve them. Once the dehydration process is complete, the roses soak in dye to give them the vibrant colors.

Venus et Fleur makes a few different styles to display their dehydrated roses. I love the Parisian-style hatboxes and the clear boxes. Some of the clear boxes even have drawers, so they are pretty and functional.

Let’s get started on this tutorial where I will show you how to make a fake flower arrangement for your Valentine.

// supplies

I got most of my supplies from Dollar Tree. They have a lot of great florals at Dollar Tree, so you can customize this with whatever shade of flower you or your sweetie like best.

I like that this box from Michael’s has a lid, because you can watch as your Valentine opens the box and is surprised to see the beautiful arrangement inside. The little peek-a-boo hole on top will give a hint of what’s inside!

// instructions

One of the things that makes those boxes so elegant, is the gold trim on the edges. When you place the cover underneath, you still have that touch of gold showing along the trim.

  1. Just a little tape on the edges and some gold paint and once you let it dry, you have a gorgeous box with elegant gold trim. I used Scotch tape because my box had a semi-gloss finish, so there was no concern about it ripping the paper. If you are using a matte finish box, you may need to use blue painters tape instead.

2. Secure the foam inside the box with a hot glue gun. I really had to improvise here, because I didn’t have enough styrofoam and it was too late at night to go to Dollar Tree. Crafter problems!

3. I made sure to leave the stems long enough, so they would stick far into the foam and not move around. If you are worried they will move, just add a little dollop of hot glue to keep them in place. You will want to push the flowers together tightly because you don’t want any of the styrofoam showing.

// the comparison

Whether you pay over $100 for a real arrangement that has been dehydrated or whether you use flowers from Dollar Tree like I did, they both require similar care. You don’t need to water them of course, but keeping them dust free is important. You can just use a duster without any chemicals on it to keep them free of dust.
