Coastal Decor Ideas | Kirkland's Inspired Dollar Tree DIYs

What do you think of when you hear the word “vacation”? I think of a peaceful, tropical beach with sounds of seagulls and waves. If that vibe sounds good to you too, then you’re going to love bringing those tropical vibes into your home with 3 Kirkland’s inspired Dollar Tree DIYs.

We’ll start with the Kirkland’s dupes and at the end I’ll show you a quick tropical tablescape using our 3 DIYs. I did a video showing you the whole process, in case you want to check it out below.

Kirklands Dupe  #1 // Lantern

I wanted a really elegant coastal look, so I thought this light wood lantern would be perfect for a tropical tablescape. You’ll need foamcore, rope, and paint which can all be found at Dollar Tree. I started by cutting the foamcore and glueing it together.

After gluing all the pieces together, it was time to paint. To give the effect of wood, keep the brush going in the same direction and don’t mix your paints together too much. I made a light brown with some brown and white paint and then added a little more brown but didn’t mix it in too well, so it would create a few streaks. Those streaks are what give it that wood texture.

I added a little piece of masking tape to either side of the rope and colored it with a black Sharpie. A little bit of hot glue on the end of the rope, and place it on the lantern.

Here we have the final look. What do you think of the comparison? For a fraction of the cost, we have a very similar look!

Kirklands Dupe #2 // Mirror

I loved this nautical rope mirror, but for $79, well, I think we can do better than that. Dollar Tree had rope in stock in their floral section. I already had a round mirror from Michael’s, but I have seen round mirrors at Dollar Tree.

I started by hot gluing the rope to the mirror and made sure the rough edges were all at the same point. I plan on reusing this mirror in the future, but if you wanted to make this ultra permanent, you could use a stronger bonding glue, like E6000.

Next, I gathered the twine and got it as lined up as possible. I put a small amount of hot glue and then pushed it under the rope with a bamboo skewer. I found those skewers at Dollar Tree in a pack of 100 and they have really come in handy for lots of projects.

The final step is to add the loop at the top. I simply attached the thick rope in a loop with some hot glue. Then wrapped the twine around many times and secured it with glue in the back.

Here is what my version looks like next to the Kirkland’s one. So much cheaper and looks so close to the original!

Kirklands Dupe #3 // Fish sculpture

I thought this fish sculpture would look great on our tablescape. It’s on sale for $89, but it was originally $120!

I only ended up using 1½ of these little tubs of Play-doh that I found at Dollar Tree. You probably could get away with just getting one because I made one extra fish in case one broke when I baked it…but I didn’t end up needing the 6th fish.

After forming the fish, I baked them on a foil lined baking sheet at 200 for 15 minutes and left them in the oven overnight. They weren’t all the way hard the next day, so I flipped them over and baked them for 30 minutes. It is about a 3 day process for the Play-doh to get fully hardened without cracking.

When I painted them, the paint did crackle a little and I don’t know if that is because they weren’t hard enough or just the reaction to the paint on the clay. I didn’t mind the crackle effect, because it made these look even more rustic and more like wood. It even gives the effect of scales!

Next, I took these foam cubes from Dollar Tree and glued them together.

To hide any seams, I hot glued some contact paper to the outside and painted it.

I painted some wooden dowels from Dollar Tree and attached them to the backs of the fish with some E6000. The next day they were fully dried and on there really good.

I used an X-acto to make a hole for the dowels to go through the contact paper. They stuck into the foam cubes really well and felt sturdy.

Beachy tablescape

I started my beachy tablescape with a white tablecloth and this fishing net decor from Dollar Tree. I used a wood tray I already had and added our fish sculpture, lantern and some shells from Dollar Tree.

These pineapple napkins from Dollar Tree were really thick and soft and have a high end feel to them with the gold foil finish. I thought they added an elegant touch to our coastal tablescape.

To add some color and a little more tropical flair, I placed the green leaves behind the napkins.

I used some Dollar Tree fabric on a piece of foam core to create little name tags for each place setting.
