Dollar Tree Kirkland's Inspired DIYs with a Modern Farmhouse Look

Today I’m sharing 3 Kirklands inspired DIY dupes that have the same look for less money. These modern farmhouse DIYs look SO close to the originals for just a few dollars each. I can’t wait to show you how easy these are, and I did a video, if you want to watch below.

There is also a free printable for the sign, so scroll down to get that download and make your own “love” sign!

Kirkland’s Dupe  #1 // canisters

First, we’ll be making this set of 3 canisters from Kirkland’s. Blue and white home decor is so elegant and perfect for that modern farmhouse look. These are regularly $45, but we are going to make them for only $4 with some Dollar Tree finds.

In the gift wrapping section at Dollar Tree, they had these cylinder style gift boxes, so I picked up 2 of those. And they also had some table tennis balls, which will work for the handle on the top of the canisters.

I gave these a coat of white spray paint and then finished up with a second coat of paint. Then I got to painting the blue pattern.

Even though it looks like a complex design, I freehanded this because the patterns are actually very simple. Basically, just patterns of lines repeated over and over again. It went pretty quick painting on those designs.

I used some glue to pop on those table tennis balls that I had painted white. And can you believe how close these look to the original for only $4 versus $45!?

Kirkland’s Dupe #2 // love sign

Don’t you love how cheap and easy these dupes are!?

I thought this sign was so cute, simple and chic. It kind of has a boho vibe. But for $45, well, I think we can do better than that. Oh, and I have a free printable for the sign, so scroll down if you want to download that pdf.

Here’s what we’ll be using from Dollar Tree. This is a cute Summer sign, but what I really wanted it for, is to make a nice solid backing for the sign. I also picked up 2 packages of wood craft cubes and that ended up being the perfect amount to make this 8.5”x11” sign.

First, I popped off that rope and gave the smooth side a coat of white paint.

While the paint dried, I worked on re-creating the lettering. I found the right fonts and laid this out in Adobe Illustrator. The way the loop of the “L” didn’t extend out to the left bothered me, so I created the shape to make it match the Kirkland’s version more closely. I think it came out pretty close!

all you need is love sign

I have a free printable of the “love” sign. Just print it out on 8.5x11” paper and put in a frame or make your own Dollar Tree frame, like I did! Fill out the form below to download your free pdf right now.

Since I wanted to print on a letter size piece of paper, my board needed to be cut. This was really hard to cut with my dinky saw, but I made it work! My arm was sore afterwards, but I’m happy I didn’t use foam core or something lightweight, because then it could have caused the sign to bow.

I sanded off any little imperfections or bumps on the board. This was only $1, so I wouldn’t expect it to be perfectly made.

I saw this spray mount at Dollar Tree, but didn’t end up using it because it wasn’t strong enough. The paper just lifted off the board! As a graphic designer, I’m used to the good stuff – 3M Super 77 spray mount, but I didn’t have any on hand.

So, without my trusty Super 77, I just put drops of Elmer’s glue along the edges to ensure that no bumps or creases would happen in the center of the paper.

Next, we took the wood craft cubes and hot glued those into place.

I threw a piece of paper on the back with some glue, just to make sure none of that red paint or glitter on the sign got on my wall. No one is going to see the back of this sign, so it doesn’t have to look perfect. Add a little picture hook and there you have it, a $45 sign for just $3!

Kirklands Dupe #3 // faux wood tray

The last Kirkland’s copy cat is this wooden tray with rope handles. We are going to make this $29 tray for only $2! I know I’m excited!

They had these cute trays for Summer at and then this nice amount of rope at Dollar Tree for, you guessed it…a dollar!

I put a coat of white paint over the tray before I did the hand painting. The spray paint coat doesn’t have to be completely covered, but just enough to create a base for the other paint we will be putting on top.

A little brown and white paint with a brush will easily give you this wood look. I tried to pick up various shades to add dimension and create the illusion of wood. Make sure to check out my video if you want to see more detail of my painting technique.

how to make something look like wood

I found this superglue at Dollar Tree and used this to attach the rope handles. I used some packaging tape to hold the rope in place until it dried.

I think this looks pretty close to the original and at a huge savings! $2 versus $30 at Kirkland’s!
