DIY Command Center | Boho on a Budget

Hello to all my Artsy friends! With all the time being spent working at home, I needed to update my home office to have a wall dedicated to organization. Today we’ll be building a boho themed command center. It’s easier than it looks!

If you want to see the tutorial AND how I have my home office and crafting area organized, check out the video below.

All the items I use are either from Dollar Tree, Target or Amazon. I’ll try to list as many of them as possible as I go through the tutorial.

step 1 // sketch your idea

I encourage you to do a sketch of how you want your command center to look. You may need different areas than I did, but here is what I chose for mine. I ended up moving things around as I measured, but this is the general idea. It’s always good to go into something with a plan!

step 2 // the frame

If you already have a frame, you could just pop out the picture and use that. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any big enough that would work, so I hunted for the biggest frame I could find for the lowest price. I found this 27x40 frame at Target. You will also need two pieces of foam core from Dollar Tree.

I disassembled the frame and then painted the frame with some white primer and then a nice shade of gold paint. The gold paint won’t show up on the black frame if you don’t use the white primer first.

step 3 // measure and cut

Lots of measuring and cutting in the next few steps. You know what they say, “Measure twice, cut once.” That is what we will be doing with all the pieces of this command center.

I started with the foam core and cut it to size. Then used some tape to keep them together. Don’t worry about the seams, we will cover those later.

I found these cork sheets at Dollar Tree and they are actually really sticky. No need for extra adhesive.

Now for an exciting trip to Paper Source. If you are a crafty designer nerd like me, you will be super excited about a paper store too.

You could use whatever rolls of wrapping paper that you have sitting around, but I’m always looking for an excuse to go to a paper store.

They had this happy little wall of paper, so I looked for some papers with some gold and bohemian vibes. I got more than I needed for this project, so look for the leftovers in future crafts.

I cut these pieces of boho themed papers to size for the sections at the bottom. Then I used my trusty Super 77 spray mount to stick these directly onto the foam core.

Next, we will be trimming this roll of whiteboard paper I found on amazon.

Putting this on the foam core was the trickiest part of this whole project. I recommend peeling back the whiteboard sticker just about an inch at a time and slowly working your way across. It can quickly become wrinkled if you don’t take you time on this part. I have a handy paper rolling pin which made the task easier.

step 4 // finishing touches

I used some E6000 to attached this pom pom ribbon on one of the sections. I will be hanging cards and notes here with some clips.

Then I used some more E6000 to mount this wire basket from Dollar Tree onto the bottom middle section. I put something heavy on top to help it adhere better as it dried.

I used the Scotch gold washi tape along the various sections of the command center. It stuck really good on the paper areas and the whiteboard, but on the cork it wanted to come off, so I used a little glue to hold it down.

I’m going to be doing a weekly calendar, so I divided the whiteboard into 7 sections and this washi tape can be taken on and off easily without damaging the white board.

I used some sticky letters for the month and those also can be easily switched from month to month.

I used an old frame and put a little sign that I made in there. I want this frame to be removable, so I can switch the quote every month or so. I used velcro for this purpose.

This boho command center is really lightweight thanks to the foam core backing. This made it easy to hang and I can always swap out the sections some day without feeling like I’m breaking the bank.
